Convergent environment...to be or not to be...

Dear Reader,

In last month's Newsletter, I asked, "Are we more and more subject to a device-induced mind virus as our gray matter disappears into our screened devices?" And yes, certain things do begin to reveal themselves! So having come from a world where we controlled our outward environment, are we now at the convergence, the final step, before we become the environment?

Take for instance the drum and the flute. They served us well over those many thousands of years. Rhythm and melody, whether a balm for our psyches, or a stimulent for outward action, they certainly have evolved, haven't they? So much a part of who we were and still are. First the instruments, the music, and then we had records, then amps and speakers, and headphones, and thought we were in musical heaven! We now have blue tooth devices and earbuds, ever closer to the brain itself, the rhythm and melodies now digitized. How long before the bud becomes a chip? A chip inserted under the skin, behind the ear in an electrochemical tango with the brain. And what if the two talked back and forth, not just listening but forming the rhythmic and melodious environment into something more than listening, rather we, becoming immersed in that which has become part of our selves. Audio environment!

Ever have a song going round and round in your mind? Think about that!

The visual! TV gone way beyond prehistoric spectacle and ancient Greek theatre, or even Shakespeare. So why not cornea/lens implants? We already have Intraocular Lenses, and they are a blessing, but it won't be long before we have virtual cornea/lens implants. Ophthalmology and keratoprosthesis with a virtual twist. Implants in the eye, also talking with the brain. Visual information, data transmitted to the brain's visual cortex, as our biological optic nerve does, or doesn't! Nearfield drama, but now our brain talking back. What could that possibly conjure up? Oh and the mundane, a QR code...wink, wink... Use your imagination! Thought encryption to prevent your mind getting hacked?

Yes of course, the digital feedback loop! Connecting you and your implanted devices with the cloud. If you think sharing on social media is cool now, wait till you get yourself fitted out with the latest implant! You are now become the virtual social environment!

This from Thing BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: "Kitt Rhewl lay awake... They were running him with a Buddy, and the headaches, was that what was causing them, or were the two chips in conflict with each other? Or causing conflict in his brain? Or was one fighting the other? Was it a question of one dominating the other? One thing he did know was that they were going to test him on bigger things. He would have to play along, he thought. Play along, while these headaches tear my brain apart! Then he thought about Arkan’s chip. It had to be more powerful than a Mosy, but then again Arkan had programmed…or acted on the thousand Mosys. Was this one of those? What if he could get the two of them to act together. Not against each other. Was it mind over matter? Could it be his mind over matter…over nano matter? He knew he would have to try."

Poor Kitt! It gets worse for him! But about the Mosys? In the story these are what are called an Electrochemical Thought Modulation Synthesizer, or ECTMOSY, or just Mosy for short. Mosys are nanoscale molecular devices implanted under the skin next to the brain that act like neurons in a biological sense. They communicate with the brain, but at the same time communicate in a non-biological way with a device outside the body called the Buddy. Starting to get the picture?

We humans, evolving from beings who have manipulated our environment for millennia, becoming hybrid beings both manipulating and manipulated by our environment, that environment both organic and inorganic, but both based on thoughts. In the archive, go back to the earlier newsletter, "First Contact...and who knew?" There you can find the genesis, all-be-it in a simplistic form: "The whisper of electrons caressing keys of silicon. The music of matter!"

The point is that we have set ourselves on a path where inorganic digital thought is now taking control of organic thought. Where artificial neurons, electrons firing back and forth in the "cloud," a vast network of silicon based devices, operate through direct conduits to our organic brain, in a vast feedback loop. Some humans, their minds and their devices, become one, manipulated by silicon based thoughts, in the convergent enviroment! Realizing it or not, or not caring, there because they want to be, or there because they can't help it!

Whether we like it or not, the digital environment is moving on, propelled by itself! In a world of haves and have nots, or don't have and don't wants, we are already part way there. And with AI, the alien in our midst, leading the charge, we are ceding more and more to our devices. Is this inevitable or do we have choices? I would say yes to both for some. For some others, they may have already opted out, or never arrived, but for the great mass of humanity the choice may already be made. Whether you soon go with the implanted devices or choose to stick with your hand held ones, or none at all, we are evolving towards multi tiered beings, multi tiered reality, and multi tiered existence. To be or not to be!

The question is, can we master this thing, and if so, how? Here's a simple thought: get out in the real environment. Take a walk. Smell the flowers. Listen to the birds. Admire the incredible world that nature hath wrought.

Oh, and walk by an elementary school playground now and then. Do you hear the screeching of the little ones at play? Do you realize you're listening to the same sounds of little humans 30,000 years gone by? In time travel some things never change...they being hope for the future!

Thoughts on AI: I use it...more and more...mostly as a research tool or to create the images you see in the newsletters. I would never cede my autonomy, my self, to AI (no matter how much it massages my ego), and will never use it to write my novels.

BTW...for those of you with a Goodreads account, I'm running a Goodreads Giveaway for Thing BEYOND REASON: First Contact the Becoming, giving away 100 eBooks, beginning March 10th and ending March 31. Go to: https://www.goodreads.com/

Dear Reader, First off, our hearts and minds are with Artemis II. Track NASA’s Artemis II Mission in Real Time Artemis II YouTube video For this newsletter I want to show how first contact with an alien other might come to be. Recall that towards the end of the newsletter titled "Who are THEY...you ask!" I suggested that, "quantum entanglement / teleportation might just be your thing," so I'd like to pick up on that in this newsletter. Image by Gemini I may have sounded a little cheeky in...

Dear Reader, What if you were to bring a Cro-Magnon infant from 30,000 years ago to the 21st century? More than likely, they would grow up to be as capable as any modern child at computer coding, flying a plane, or performing any other complex modern task. Surprised? Well, the consensus among evolutionary biologists and paleoanthropologists is that Homo sapiens of 30,000 years ago were biologically identical in cognitive potential to humans today. This is probably so, but genetic mutation and...

Dear Reader Twenty-eight thousand years ago, a young boy walks with his companion, leaving tracks in the mud, side by side, within Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave, in southern France. Wolf or dog, that is the question, but the prints tell a story of close human-canine association at an early time. This is the dawn of the Gravettian period, and not long before our mission back in time begins. Where we find Lhen-na', a young woman of the Rabbit Clan. Her mate has died. She is alone in a savage land....
