Dear Reader In Thing BEYOND REASON: First Contact the Becoming now published and up on Amazon, in Chapter 12 we find ourselves at the White House: STANLEY RITENHOWER, NASA Administrator, and Gabriel Forstman, NASA's Chief Scientist had come to personally brief the President. They were in the Situation Room with Felix Clerkman, the National Security Advisor and Nelson Scott, who had been President Orr’s Chief of Staff. President Callahan had retained him as her own Chief of Staff, and it seemed to be working out, but that was another matter. More than a year ago she had been here in the same room with President Orr and the same people for very much the same reason... “So Gabriel, not a lot like the first one?” “Well yes and no, growing faster, started from the central peak like the first one, but this crater is many times bigger than the first one.” He zoomed the view out on the big screen. “As you see, I now have the laser pointer on the first dome, the one we call the Dome.” “So small!” “Yes, in comparison, if we assume it will grow all the way out to the rim of this crater…” “Sharonov, you said?” “Yes, big enough to be a named crater…” “And just how big is it?” “Widest point better than sixty miles, but say average diameter more like fifty-five miles.” “Huge!” “The biggest in the area…" And back on Mars with Jason: ...I felt more of Mars than ever before and as the sun sank into a blue halo in the west I stood looking back the way I had come. My Dome was now far in the distance and no higher than the high bluffs it blended with along the south side of the great valle. I stood atop a shallow bluff and traced my route now partly in shadow... As I went, the rock strata fractured by the blast wave forming concentric ridges around the crater peeled back by the meteor impact was still rising up ahead of me. I recalled what Arkan said of the impact moment. First contact, as he called it. That each event had its moment of being embedded in the fabric of time. That such events were not the same for inanimate matter as for sentient beings or sapient beings like Humans and Arkinians, but that each infinite moment held within itself a potential and a connection with the time fabric. That the potential was infinite. That each moment held potential only limited by the experience of it. The beingness of it! That's just a taste of BEYOND REASON and much more to come, but with the image above, I thought I would show some of my methodology in crafting Jason's journeys, not just on Mars as in books 2 and 3, but back in time as in book 1, Thing FIRST CONTACT. Both Google Earth and Google Mars are amazing tools when it comes to placing your characters geographically and in the landscapes that matter to the story. But what about this Thing...the Problem of time? Beyond reason! Dive in if you dare, but let's travel back to book 2, Thing BETWEEN TWO WORLDS and see what Arkan had to say then. Jason is on the Ark with Arkan orbiting Mars: “And the Dome?” “The crater.” “The crater?” “A moment in the fabric of time.” “You mean the impact.” “Yes, the impact and all the energy that is there.” “In the matter.” “Yes.” “You mean that the Dome used the energy transferred from the meteor to the ground on impact and grew out of that, not from the Ark.” “Each impact has its moment in the fabric of time, an event tied to the energy released by the impact moment.” “Yes, yes I’m following you!” He chuckled. “The Ark only had to contact that impact events moment, its point of being embedded in the fabric of time.” “Go on.” “It's no different than what it does when contacting your point of being embedded in the time fabric.” “When I am traveling in time, going back in time?” “Well yes and no, but let us focus on the Dome. Why don’t you relax and be in the light, the glow. I want to take you there.” “There…” “Yes.” …and I was there…there in the Glowww… as never before, a point, a tunnel infinitely tiny, all rolled up and dense and bright if I had eyes to see it, through the veil, coalescing in ways it had done when I was traveling… All for now, but I thought you would like to see the 3 books of The THING Trilogy together! Writing The THING Trilogy has been a journey in itself...an odyssey really...and one that is going to continue. I look forward to sharing more about that journey and the insights gained along the way. So... Dear Reader The week past, September 26 through 28th, I attended the first Aspen Literary Festival! I think it was a great success, but my take away may have been different than most. It was one of those classic Aspen fall days... And day 3 of the Festival! Kendall Williams photo The scene unfolds in the Aspen Community Church a block away from the Festival headquarters at the Red Brick School House! Dear Reader Have you ever had one of those things that just happened. Something that materialized in your minds eye for no other reason but that it was there! The image below is one of those! Not the first...not the last, but one that has stayed with me with its own special relevance... Yes, a white and green 25 window VW Microbus! Put yourself in Asmara, Ethiopia. You've been hitchhiking across Africa for 8 months. More than 6,000 miles! You've had malaria twice...and not just malaria......
