Welcome and all the best to you in the New Year. You made it through the Holidays and maybe now it’s time to kick back and let your mind go places your busy schedule may not have allowed… Maybe wondering about this thing we call our world. I am author, Kendall Williams, creator of The THING Trilogy and ThingWorld, a forum for sharing our human journey. Thank you for being here and sticking with me. More about myself in a little bit, but to get our thoughts working, let’s ask a question… “What will happen to our world, our sense of reality as virtual and augmented realities become more advanced?” Certainly a question for our time but not much different than ones philosophers have grappled with for millennia. Plato said: "Reality is created by the mind, we can change our reality by changing our mind." Socrates said: "An unexamined life is not worth living." And of course René Descartes said: "Cogito, ergo sum." ("I think, therefore I am.") In The THING Trilogy, we travel back in time with Jason, a young amateur astronomer, to encounter Plato in dire straits and later on are with Socrates as his life is examined by those who bid him no good at all. Along the way we encounter those dumbfounded by Descartes, but before Jason begins his epic journey through the fabric of time, he meets Arkan, the awesome alien intelligence of the Ark...come into our solar system...putting all our human assumptions in doubt. That is the dilemma! Click the links above to go more in depth later on, but for now let’s dive into the three book series that lies at the heart of ThingWorld. Science fiction has always existed as a way of posing questions difficult to examine in any other way. The THING Trilogy asks just such questions and is anchored in the 'First Contact Science Fiction' genre. THING as used in this series is not a monster, rather something indefinable that permeates all creation. The subgenres are 'Time Travel Science Fiction' with elements of 'Hard Science Fiction' and 'Metaphysical Science Fiction.' The major themes have their origin in the notion that all beings and all things come to be through points of being embedded in the fabric of time and that there is magic in those infinite moments. Without explicitly saying so, the story explores aspects of quantum physics, spirituality, consciousness, and how we might transcend the human condition. Our journey begins with book one, Thing FIRST CONTACT: A Journey Through the Fabric of Time, and continues with book two, Thing BETWEEN TWO WORLDS: In the Aftermath of FIRST CONTACT. Book three, ‘Thing BEYOND REASON: First Contact, The Becoming,’ is nearing completion and will be published early in 2025. Some changes may happen between now and then, but to give some of the flavor here is the beginning of Chapter 20: SHARONOVIANS. Jason is with Arkan, the alien: 'IN THE DOME of the Ark I watch Arkan. For the first time there is a hint of confusion in his demeanor. “You say it was inevitable.” “Yes.” “And therefore need not be discussed…” “...until it should come to pass.” “And now it has.” “Yes.” “And I have been there to observe the result…” “You have.” “And you have been with me…” “In a manner of speaking.” “Your creation.” “You can say that.” “You want my help.” “Not help.” “This thing is your creation!” “Not help, commitment.” I give him the slightest smile. This is something else. He is nodding his head. Then it comes into my thoughts. “Your mission!” “Yes.” “Now my mission too.” “If you choose it.” Arkan has not been devious, but he is pushing the limits of omission, in a manner of speaking. I had to laugh. For the first time it was on him. Destiny! Arkinian destiny entangled with Human destiny.' Dear Reader Time to kick back and let your mind go… You're on Mars now... Ottumwa Crater, from central peak - Derived from Google Mars "It was stupendous in scale and distance. Arkan had said he wanted to put me in a crater because it was round. He said I would get power from it...the rim might be several thousand feet higher than where I was standing, and miles away. The floor of the crater looked to be two thousand, maybe three thousand feet below me. The land and the sky merged,...
